78 kicks out quite a bit of smoke as it is started up after presumably being left to stand for a while. Gardner engines were normally very clean running but when stood oil tended to migrate down the valves into the cylinders, burning off in this rather smoky manner when started. The smoke would soon clear.
At the back of the bus the conductor looks to be dressed for a cold winter’s day.
