UC4169 slogs up the steep climb to Fernhill Colliery. It's hard to imagine that fully-laden Regent IIIs would follow this same road or that it would for a few years have a half-hourly service. The long terrace that formed Caroline Street was just off the right of the picture but had been demolished by this time.
UC4169 had been new to Western Welsh as 176 and was specified for onerous duties with a five-speed semi-automatic gearbox, two-speed rear axle and exhaust brake. It also featured a Webasto combustion heater which allowed the interior to be brought up to temperature without running the engine. Renumbered UC469 in Aug-1974 it became UC4169 fifteen months later and was never downgraded to dual-purpose.
