Subject: Gateshead & District 51 Maker: Electric Railway and Tramway Carriage Works, Preston Truck: Brill 21E Body type: Water Car Location: unknown Date: unknown
Water car 51 was new in 1903 and this photograph was taken after delivery and used a local photographer. From the condition of the vehicle I judge it to be not long after delivery, though. The transfer below the BET magnet-and-wheel, partly obscured by the bracing, shows that this vehicle was supplied through Dick, Kerr.
An unusual detail is that this vehicle bears the name of John Metcalf, the Assistant Manager, rather than the General Manager Henry Foley whose name appears on all the contemporary passenger trams.
