4 and 93 were providing transport for miners to and from the pit head baths at Merthyr Vale colliery (and possibly also Abercynon Dowlais Cardiff) as those at Deep Navigation colliery in Treharris were not functioning.
The road has been straightened here since the closure of the Pontypool Road-Neath railway line which ran on an embankment about where the far bus is. This turn was once a lot more acute.
